Choosing to SEE by Mary Beth Chapman Book Review

image

Choosing to SEE: A Journey of Struggle and Hope
by Mary Beth Chapman and Ellen Vaughn
ISBN: 978-0-8007-1991-3

From the publisher:

In Choosing to SEE, Chapman bares her heart and soul as she shares honestly about her personal journey - from her childhood, to challenges of married life, to the sudden and tragic loss of a daughter. Choosing to SEE  follows her lifelong wrestling match with God, questioning why the life she had planned so carefully doesn't seem to match to the plan that God has mapped out for her. The book also explores Mary Beth Chapman's relationship with God in the face of the unexpected, and in the pain of such a brutal loss. Throughout the pages, Chapman tackles these questions with grace, grit, insight, and most of all, hope.
"I have cried so many tears mixed with the sadness of missing Maria and the joy of remembering her!" Chapman writes. "I think when those tears get all mixed up together and fall, it has to water the dry places of our hearts and begin to slowly heal us..."

My Review:

All I can say is WOW!  This book is not a typical book.  I cried as soon as I got it in the mail.  The pictures alone brought emotions.  I’m usually not a very emotional one until children are involved.

I love Steven Curtis Chapman, who is a Christian singer.  We even played one of his songs at our wedding.  He has been around in Christian music industry for a long time.

His family life was not something with which I was familiar.  His wife put it in perspective that I now feel like a fly on their walls.

I have a new appreciation for him and especially his wife.  Her struggles dealing with depression, having children, married to a musician, adopting China children, raising children, and then having to bury one child is something I admire.

I think I clicked with her immediately when she says she loves to play practical jokes.  My heart just loves when I find a kindred spirit.

Her humor throughout the book had me laughing so hard that it woke up my husband as he slept next to me, more than once.  For a Christian, to be so blunt – just warmed my heart.

As for the actual writing – it was written in a way that kept my interest.  You just never knew what she was going to say.

Would I recommend this book?  IN A HEARTBEAT!!!   It is REAL and truly life-changing!

I can’t imagine ever losing one of my babies.  I would NEVER wish that on anyone!  However, if I did – I would want my faith to prove as strong and real as Mary Beth Chapman’s!

Blessings to you!  You are loved!!!

Mary Beth and Steven Curtis Chapman have been married for 25 years and have six children: Emily (24), Caleb (20), Will Franklin (19), and Shaohannah Hope (10), Stevey Joy (7), and Maria Sue, who is now with Jesus. In 2001, the couple began an adoption ministry, Show Hope, which began as an assistance to families in the process of adoption, particularly by helping tear down the financial barrier that prevents many from bringing an adopted child into their home. To date, Show Hope is now an internationally recognized voice for orphan advocacy and has given over 2,300 financial grants, affecting the lives of children from 45 different countries, including the U.S. In addition to giving financial grants, Show Hope empowers families, churches and communities with adoption and orphan care resources and advocacy efforts. Mary Beth currently serves as the president of Show Hope (ShowHope.org). Along with her husband, she has also co-authored three books for their Shaoey and Dot children's series, and she continues to write a compelling blog found on her website. Whisper in the Wind by Maureen Lang Book Review

image
Whisper in the Wind by Maureen Lang
List Price:  12.99
ISBN:  978-1-4143-2436-4
Release:  September 2010

From the Publisher:
In Brussels at the height of WWI, a small, underground newspaper is the only thing offering the occupied city hope—and real news of the war. The paper may be a small whisper amid the shouts of the German army, but Edward Kirkland will do anything to keep it in print. Meanwhile, Isa Lassone, a Belgian-American socialite whose parents whisked her to safety at the start of the war, sneaks back into the country to rescue those dearest to her: Edward and his mother. But Edward refuses to go, and soon Isa is drawn into his secret life printing the newspaper . . . And into his heart.
My Review:
War stories are not my favorite kind of books.  They bring sadness.  This book brought sadness yet was filled with hope like no other.
I fell in love with the characters and could relate to each one.  It put a new spin on “war” stories, one that made it real – with real life people – not just a John Wayne kind of story.
All through the book, I kept asking myself - “how would I have responded?”  I got to be honest, my faith was being tested just reading this book.  This book is an emotional one, that is for sure!
Would I recommend it?  Yes, but with caution!  Be prepared to get mad, get sad, be hopeful, rejoice and then just wonder!
Blessings to you!  You are loved!

What’s in the Bible: Wanderin' in the Desert DVD Review

image
List Price:  14.99
ISBN:  978-1-4143-3632-9
Release:  May 2010
From the publisher:
Buck Denver and friends journey through Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy to finish out the Pentateuch in the 3rd DVD from What’s in the Bible?
Wanderin’ in the Desert contains two 25-minute episodes.
Part 1: Don’t lie, don’t cheat … don’t trim your beard? The Old Testament is full of rules, and some of them are kind of, well, weird. Learn why God gave all these rules to Israel and which ones still apply to us today!
Part 2: What is a Pentateuch? Learn about Israel’s 40-year “time-out” as we finish the first five books of the Bible! Plus, discover why we can believe what the Bible says – even though we weren’t there to see it happen!
My Review:
“Mom!  Can we watch a movie?”
How many times do you hear this on a daily basis?  In our house, it is at least once a day in our home!
This is one video series – we could watch over and over and never quit learning.
Even as adults – we have so many theology Bible questions.
For example:  What is the difference between ceremonial law and moral law?  (I.e. telling a lie and eating pork.)
I know this DVD is meant mostly for kids but I can’t even begin to tell you how much my hubs and I have gleaned from it.  We just love listening to the DVD while driving in the car.
This series is an awesome resource for home school and young Christians.  (It is even great review for “old” Christians.)    The history of the Pentateuch is explained in such a way that is down to earth and with reason.  I would have never even had attempted to teach this in my school – I truly will use this for years to come.
Of course, it is infused with humor, quacky songs and cute characters.   My kids loved Buck Denver!  My fave is the Sunday School Teacher!

Blessings to you!  You are loved!

    From the publisher:

For months, it worked…but now her luck has run out. A ruthless assassin is on her trail, and soon Nora, now known as Danielle, will be found. But this time, she has FBI agent Nate Andersen by her side—right? The handsome agent would give his life to protect Danielle, but he's wary of giving his heart…until a deadly confrontation leaves him with both on the line.

    My Review:

I read a lot.  I enjoy getting into a good story.  There are some books that are worth giving up sleep.  This one kept me up till 3:00 a.m.  I couldn’t put it down until I knew what happened.  True suspense from the start!

The characters were easy to follow and the “love” part was kept pure.

I like the size of this book – not too long – not too short – perfect for taking a time out with a bubble bath.   A mother’s delight!

Yes, I would recommend this book and look forward to reading more of Liz Johnson!

Blessings to you!  You are loved!

His Princess Girl Talk with God by Sheri Rose Shepherd Review

    image

His Princess Girl Talk with God: Love Letters and Devotions for Young Women
    By Sheri Shepherd
    ISBN: 978-0-8007-1952-4
    Retails:  $14.99

This book is simply been a joy!

It has 40 daily devotions that are super easy and fast to read.

It has a sweet and heart warming story followed by a “letter” by God.  The letter is not a real letter but something – you could hear Him say or tell you personally.

I loved this little book.  It takes sometimes hard decisions or situations and gives it a Godly vision.  I love when that happens!!!

It would make a great graduation or sweet birthday gift for a mature young lady (due to some of the references that are meant for marriage only).

“Available  July 2010 at your favorite bookseller from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group.”
